Sydenham High School - Sydenham, Ontario |
|
|
What a grand location for the newest triathlon, duathlon, kayak tri, and run, in the Somersault Series - the Town of Sydenham - named after Canada's first Governor General!
Sydenham, sits on the Southwest shore of Sydenham Lake in the Township of South Frontenac, just a few minutes drive North of Kingston, Ontario. Believe it or not the town was founded more than 200 years ago, and has a distinguished history in agriculture, mining, railways, and more recently as a growing residential, and vacation area as well as a great place to visit. You just have to check out the second oldest General Store in Canada - it is really cool!
The picturesque town park on clean, clear Sydenham Lake flanked by its two community schools, and football field is a perfect setting for this multi-sport event. The adjacent Cataraqui Trail (part of the Trans Canada Trail) provides an ideal run course, which complements the rolling, well paved cycle route.
We encourage you to make the Greater Kingston SYDENHAM Triathlon, Duathlon, Kayak Tri, and Run part of your 2010 event schedule. There is an event for everyone, from 2 to 82!
See you in Sydenham on July 4th, 2010!

somersault junior program
We are proud to continue to build the Somersault Junior Program in 2010. This program is designed to encourage those 12 years and older to participate, by offering distances that are age appropriate, and by providing 2 year age categories at 13 & under, 14-15, 16-17, and 18-19. Athletes in these categories will feel comfortable in Somersault events, and are automatically ranked in the Junior Champions Challenge.
student discount
Students born in 1986 or later, and enrolled in school during the 2009 year, receive a 40% discount on the entry fee.
relays
Triathlon Relays are a fun feature of the Greater Kingston SYDENHAM Triathlon& Duathlon. Get a threesome (or a twosome) together for some fun and fitness! try a tri challenge
For anyone who has always wanted to "Try a Tri" or those who don't want to be too competitive, the Try A Tri makes it possible for a healthy person to complete a triathlon for the first or the twentieth time.
super sprint triathlon
This category and race is separate from the Try A Tri Challenge. The Try A Tri is intended for the first timer, once a year, novice or recreational participant, while this race is geared to those who are a bit more serious but want to go short and fast, instead of longer and slower.
olympic triathlon - note cut off times
Due to road permits and cycle safety issues, we have imposed cut off times for the swim and the first lap of the cycle course. The swim must be completed in less than 60 minutes, and the swim plus the first lap of the cycle must be completed in less than 1 hour and 40 minutes. If you are not certain you can complete the swim and the cycle by these times, we encourage you to enter the Sprint Triathlon distance, rather than risk being pulled from the race.
olympic swimcycle - note cut off times
The SwimCycle consists of the swim and the cycle portion of the Olympic and Sprint Triathlons, in which SwimCycle participants start. Those that enter these races will run from the cycle leg directly to the finish line from the T-Zone. We are offering limited age categories this year, and will add age categories as demand dictates. Due to road permits and cycle safety issues, we have imposed cut off times for the swim and the first lap of the cycle course. The swim must be completed in less than 60 minutes, and the swim plus the first lap of the cycle must be completed in less than 1 hour and 40 minutes.
olympic swim
For the first time in any triathlon, we are offering a solo swim. This allows those with strong swimming backgrounds to duke it out with the triathletes in the water, and who knows, maybe take a first step to trying a tri.
canoe & kayak triathlons
There are two divisions here; the Canoe Tri, and the Kayak Tri. In the Kayak division, a participant completes the kayak, cycle, and the run solo. In the Canoe division, the participant has a partner of the same gender in the canoe portion of the tri, but completes the remainder of the event solo.

course
descriptions
Click here for a map of the event site and all race courses.
4Km Canoe & Kayak Course
Paddlers start in open water just off the boat ramp at the East end of the football field. The course takes paddlers along the North shore of the lake to the 2Km turn around buoy (2nd buoy), and back to the boat ramp. There is a short run from the boat ramp to the T-Zone.
1500, 500 and 200M Triathlon Swims
The swims are in Sydenham Lake to and from the Town's public beach.
Each swim is a triangle course starting on the South side of the point on which the beach is located, and finishing on the North side of the beach point.
Water temperature is expected to be 23 degrees Celsius in July. Decisions on the
number and order of the waves will be made on July 4th, and communicated to the participants at the Race
Orientation session, and at race kit pick up.
2Km First Duathlon Run/Try A Tri Run
The run begins at the Start/Finish
Line adjacent to the T-Zone on Point Rd. in the Park. The runners take an out and back course. They
head West from the start along Point Rd. and turn
right onto Wheatley St. and travel North along Wheatley St. to George St. They then turn right onto George St., and proceed along George to the Cataraqui Trail.
Runners turn right again onto the Cataraqui Trail and continue along the trail to the 2Km Run Turn Here sign
They turn around here, and retrace their route back to the T-Zone in Point Rd. Park.
20Km
Cycle Course
The 20Km cycle is an out
and back course which begins at the exit to the Transition
Zone on Point Rd. in the Park. Cyclists travel West along Point Rd. which is closed
to traffic during the event . They turn left (South) onto Wheatley Rd. (closed to all but local traffic) and proceed along Wheatley St. to Rutledge Rd., where they turn left (East) onto Rutledge. Cyclists travel East on Rutledge to Perth Rd., where they turn around and return on the same route to back to the T-Zone.
40Km
Cycle Course
The 40Km cyclists travel the same route as the 20Km cyclists above. However, when they reach Wheatley St. on their return, instead of continuing to the T-Zone, they turn around just before Wheatley St, and repeat the route back to Perth Rd. a second time. Once they have reached Perth Rd. a second time, they retrace their route back to the T-Zone on Point Rd. Nature of the Cycle
Course
The cycle course is a great one. It features a challenging climb out of the Town of Sydenham, and a scenic and rolling well paved highway to Perth Rd. and back. The roads other than as indicated, are shared with motor vehicle traffic, and cyclists as always, should exercise caution. 5 & 10Km Runs
The runs begin at the T-Zone in Point Rd. Park. The runners take a 5Km out and back course. They
head West from the start along Point Rd., turn
right onto Wheatley St. and travel North along Wheatley St. to George St. They then turn right onto George St., and proceed along George to the Cataraqui Trail.
Runners turn right onto the Cataraqui Trail and continue along the trail to the Turn Here sign, and retrace their route back to the Finish Line in Point Rd. Park.
The Olympic 10Km runners repeat the above loop and then proceed to the Finish Line.
Nature of the Run Course
The run course is a predominantly flat one with the first 200 metres slightly down hill, and of course the last 200 metres slightly uphill. It consists of a short stretch of paved road and then the firm, well used Cataraqui Trail. The 5 and 10Km trail travels beside Sydenham Lake.
Water Stations
on the Run Courses
There are water stations
on the run courses at the 1.25Km, 3.75Km, 6.25Km, and 8.75Km points, and have water and eLoad at them.

race info updates
We will email 3 weekly Greater Kingston SYDENHAM Triathlon & Duathlon Newsletters to participants with the latest updates prior to the race. These newsletters are very important as they will identify changes, answer your questions and recommend race day procedures that will make your event day a better one.
Please provide an accessible email address on your entry form if you wish to receive these Newsletters. You may want to use a personal email address rather than your work email, because many employers utilize filters that will not let the Newsletter through.
